Three students from Yellowknife’s Sir John Franklin High School took home silver medals in photography and video production at the Skills Canada National Competition.
Marie-Luna Langlois not only placed second in the photography competition, but also won the first national medal for the NWT in photography.
Kai Walden and Caelan Waddell won the territory’s second silver medal of the competition in video production, and were awarded the RBC Best of Region Award.
Langlois, Walden and Waddell are all in Grade 12 at Sir John.
A Monday news release from Skills Canada NWT said Langlois plans to pursue photography after graduation, while Walden and Waddell have competed at Skills Canada nationals four times and had previously won silver.
Team NWT had 19 competitors at this year’s nationals, including 14 in the secondary category and five in the post-secondary category. The total NWT delegation was 42 people, including coaches, a youth media representative and a National Alumni Committee representative.
The Skills Canada National Competition took place in Toronto from May 27 to May 30.
Along with photography and video production, the territory was represented in automobile technology, baking, cabinetmaking, cooking, electrical installations, fashion technology, hairstyling, job skill demonstration, mobile robotics, outdoor power and recreation equipment, plumbing, public speaking, welding, and workplace safety.
“Every single competitor showcased the passion, hard work, and dedication that they put into their trade,” Skills Canada NWT stated.
“We are so proud to see how far they came, and we hope that they are not only proud of themselves, but that they are motivated and committed to learning and improving their skills.”
Participants at the national competition were selected from the gold medallists in Skill Canada NWT’s territorial competition in April.
