RCMP in Yellowknife say they have charged two Ontario men “after a routine traffic stop evolved into a drug investigation” that uncovered a pistol stolen in the United States.

In a Monday news release, police said officers who stopped a vehicle in the city on Saturday, June 6 “formed grounds to arrest an individual after he provided false information about his identity to police.”

“The man was taken into custody and a search of his person turned up a quantity of crack-cocaine consistent with trafficking,” police stated, adding investigating officers eventually concluded the man was trafficking drugs from his rented accommodation.

A search of a home on McMahon Court turned up more than $22,000 in cash, police said, alongside about 170 grams of suspected crack cocaine and a loaded pistol “determined to have been stolen in the United States.”

A second Ontario man at the home was also arrested.

RCMP said both men were already under firearms bans and have been remanded into custody.
