Karen Youngman has won a by-election to become the new leader of the Tthebatthie Denesųłiné Nation.

Youngman defeated John Tourangeau in a by-election triggered by Lorraine MacDonald’s resignation earlier this year, the First Nation announced this week.

The precise result was not given.

Youngman had campaigned on a platform of “protecting our past,” pledging to offer compassionate leadership that “honours where we have been, understands the challenges we face, and builds on our shared history to create a stronger, more independent future.”

She described herself as having managed Kaeser’s Home Furnishings and served on the band’s council for three years.
