After lightning on Saturday, two new wildfires have been detected between 24 and 33 km southwest of Norman Wells, NWT Fire says, as well as one in the Dehcho.
Fires VQ001 and VQ002 were reported by the territory’s wildfire agency in a Sunday afternoon update.
VQ001 is 33 km south-southwest of Norman Wells, the agency said, west of the Mackenzie River. It’s reportedly 90 hectares in size and out of control.
VQ002 is 24 km southwest of Norman Wells, again west of the Mackenzie River. It is 300 hectares in size and out of control.
Smoke may be visible from the town, NWT Fire stated, but there is no present risk to communities or infrastructure.
Crews have begun initial attack on VQ002. Winds are currently pushing both fires back toward the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT Fire added.
Crews have also been assigned to another newly discovered lightning-caused fire, FS002, which is a small fire 90 km east of Wrigley.
Elsewhere, Parks Canada and NWT Fire have dissolved their unified command for the Klewi Complex fires burning in and around a section of Wood Buffalo National Park.
“This change was made by both organizations in light of significant containment progress and low risk of further fire spread outside the park boundary, beyond the current perimeter,” NWT Fire stated.
Parks Canada will now manage the complex with support from NWT Fire and others.
