Yellowknife RCMP say Williams Avenue was blocked off on Monday morning so police could carry out an arrest warrant.
The operation drew significant attention from residents. The exact detail of what was taking place was not immediately available.
Photos taken by a Cabin Radio broadcaster at the scene showed NWT RCMP had deployed its tactical armoured vehicle.
By 11:30am, officers could be heard using a megaphone to address a person or people inside a building on the street.
A person associated with the building in question described flashbangs having been used during the operation, though that could not be immediately confirmed.
“We can only say at this time that an arrest warrant is being conducted on Williams Avenue, with support from multiple police units,” an RCMP spokesperson stated shortly after noon on Monday.
“We will provide more information when possible. We are asking residents to stay away from the area.”
