Interim president Herb Nakimayak is running against Kilikvak Kabloona for president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada – the Canadian arm of an international organization representing Inuit across the Arctic.
Nakimayak previously had spells as the organization’s vice-president for international affairs and was appointed interim president last year. Alongside his terms at the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada – also known as ICC Canada – he was the NWT’s MLA for Nunakput.
Nakimayak’s biography on the ICC Canada website states he “is committed to continuing traditional ways of life through stories of Elders and hunters and trappers, including carrying out ‘On the Land’ programs for Elders and Youth.”
Kilikvak Kabloona was Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated’s first female CEO from 2018 to 2026, as reported by Nunatsiaq News. She ran as Nunavut’s Liberal candidate in the 2025 federal election.
“Throughout my career, I have worked to strengthen Inuit self-determination by building partnerships, advancing Inuit priorities, and ensuring Inuit voices are heard where decisions are made,” Kabloona said in a Facebook post announcing her candidacy.
“If elected, I will lead with integrity, humility, and determination. I will work closely with Inuit Treaty Organizations, strengthen our partnerships across Alaska, Greenland, and Chukotka, and ensure ICC Canada continues to be a strong and respected voice for Inuit on the international stage.”
ICC Canada said elections will take place on July 21, during the organization’s annual general meeting in Iqaluit.
No nominations were received for the open role of vice-president, international affairs. An election for the position would be held at a later date, ICC Canada said.
