The Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife has received almost $305,000 in funding from the federal government’s LGBTQ2 Community Capacity Fund.
The fund aims to support 2SLGBTQIA+ communities with projects that help build capacity.
“2SLGBTQIA+ youth deserve to feel safe, supported and empowered to live their truth, and communities need the tools to make that happen,” Chelsea Thacker, the Rainbow Coalition’s executive director, was quoted as saying.
The Rainbow Coalition will use the money for a project entitled “Growing Rainbow.”
It will involve creating workshops and training modules for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, their families and allies, as well as launching an online store and social media campaign.
Funds will go toward hiring staff to develop new materials about sexual orientations and gender identities and helping to educate allies, businesses, community leaders and organizations about the creation of safer, more equitable spaces in the NWT.
The Rainbow Coalition plans to collaborate with Indigenous governments and organizations, other youth-serving organizations, and Gender and Sexuality Alliance clubs in NWT schools.
