Police in Behchokǫ̀ asked residents to report any female relative or friend who’s missing after a body was found following a shed fire.

Police and the community’s fire department arrived to find a shed on fire on residential property at around 1:20am on Saturday. RCMP said the shed was “fully engulfed in flames” by the time they reached the scene.

“Investigation led to the discovery of a deceased female within the structure,” a police news release issued on Saturday stated.

“The deceased has not yet been identified. RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in reporting any female person who may not be accounted for within their friends, relatives and associates.”

If you need to report somebody missing or have any information about the fire, you can contact RCMP on 867-392-1111.

The property on which the fire took place was not identified by RCMP. The police investigation continues in cooperation with the NWT coroner’s office and the territory’s fire marshal.

Correction: Monday, September 24, 2018, 10:59. RCMP initially termed this incident a “fatal fire” but, on Monday, said the coroner had not yet determined the cause of death – implying the body may have been in the shed before the fire started. The headline of this article has been amended accordingly.
