A tanker truck sliding off the road on the outskirts of Yellowknife led to a highway closure on Thursday morning.

Both lanes of Highway 3 were closed immediately west of the highway’s airport turnoff as of 7:30am. While officials said some traffic had been allowed to pass, traffic controls remained in place throughout the morning. A detour is available via Deh Cho Boulevard.

Infrastructure minister Caroline Wawzonek, posting to Instagram, said crews were working to remove fuel from the tanker. A photo published by Wawzonek showed one tank trailer fully off the road and the other strewn across the highway.

Wawzonek said that work would “take some time.”

RCMP spokesperson Cpl Matt Halstead said the vehicle lost control in icy conditions and hit the ditch.

“The driver was uninjured and there was no spill reported,” Halstead wrote.

“The officers helped manage traffic in the area and then briefly closed the road in order to allow the tow truck to do its work.”
