A Red Dress Day walk organized by various community groups will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 5, starting at the monument in front of the legislature in Yellowknife.
“Community members are invited to come together in remembrance, solidarity, and action,” a press release stated.
The event is hosted by YWCA NWT, the NWT Native Women’s Association, NWT & Nunavut Council of Friendship Centres, Yellowknife Women’s Society and Saht’ea Adze Beadwork.
After the Yellowknives Dene Drummers open the event, guest speakers will address attendees before a walk through downtown Yellowknife. At Northern United Place, lunch and door prizes will be available.
“Red Dress Day is a nationally recognized day of reflection and advocacy, calling attention to the ongoing crisis of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Canada,” the press release stated.
“The event provides an opportunity for community members, families, and organizations to stand together, honour lives lost, and support continued action and commitment toward justice, safety, and ending violence.”
