Behchokǫ̀ RCMP say they made a “significant” drug seizure following a traffic stop on Highway 3 over the weekend.

In a Tuesday news release, police said officers stopped and searched a vehicle on Saturday in which they found 1.9 kg of cocaine, a semi-automatic handgun and a prohibited extended-round magazine.

“The presence of a significant quantity of drugs and a firearm again highlight the risks that drug traffickers present, not only to those who are struggling with addictions but also to the greater community at large,” Supt Dyson Smith was quoted as saying.

“The Northwest Territories RCMP are steadfast in their resolve to disrupt these activities, charge those responsible and seize the proceeds of this illicit and dangerous trade.”

Behchokǫ̀ was hosting a major hand games tournament at the time of the drug seizure.

Police said they arrested and charged the three people in the vehicle.

Jennifer Drygeese-Yelle, 20, from Dettah, as well as Jackito Guiawan and Othman Mohammed, both 19-year-olds from Edmonton, each face charges of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing a prohibited device and tampering with a serial number.

Police said Mohammed has also been charged with six counts of failing to comply with release conditions.

None of the charges have been proven in court.

RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Behchokǫ̀ detachment at 867-392-1111 or leave a tip anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
