Completing its move to new premises, Yellowknife’s bookstore has made one last, dramatic change: its name.

The latest edition of the store will be Yellowknife Books.

The store has moved locations several times in its 45-year history. Most recently, it could be found for many years (above ground) at the corner of 49 Street and Franklin Avenue. Now, it’s (above ground) a little farther down 49 Street.

As a result, while “book cellar” may have been a fun play on bookseller, the name has been consigned to the literary basement.

“We will still answer to Book Cellar, as we know just like the downtown Independent is, and will probably always be, Extra Foods to some,” the store posted on Facebook, acknowledging Yellowknifers’ reluctance to let a name die.

“Why change our name? Well, we’re not in a basement location and more so, English is a weird language, even when its your first language – and having a pun for a name was a never-ending headache,” the store continued.

“Are you going to hate it? Maybe. Change is hard and it is rarely comfortable, but know this: we still sell books (and many other things) and have every hope that, by whatever name you call us, we will be in this amazing community (and territory) for another 45 more years.”
