Yellowknife’s Walmart is once again accepting cash after a multi-day period earlier this month during which customers were asked to pay by another means.
The inability to pay by cash at the store touched off a number of complaints posted to Facebook – and calls to Cabin Radio – ranging from questions about how that could be legal to declarations that this marked the continuation of a steep descent into a new world order.
Walmart says its cash recycler was broken.
Cash recyclers are the machines used to automatically count and sort cash at large businesses, storing it safely then returning it for use in the store as change where necessary.
“We can confirm our Yellowknife Walmart’s cash recycler was temporarily down but has since been repaired,” a spokesperson from Walmart Canada’s corporate affairs office told Cabin Radio on Monday.
“Customers can now pay by cash along with other methods of payment. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused customers.”
