When you book a campground in the NWT this summer you’ll notice an increase in the price.

The NWT government announced on Monday that campsite fees will go up for all park users this season.

In a news release, the GNWT stated the per-night fee for powered sites will increase by $5.33 nightly, from $28 to $33.33, and by $6.07 nightly for unpowered sites, from $22.50 to $28.57.

The fee for North Slave extended-stay campsites will also increase by $6.07 per night with a 50-percent discount for full and half-season stays.

That means a May-to-September stay at Reid Lake will now cost $1,760, a 76-percent increase on the prior fee of $1,000.

A May-to-July or July-to-September stay at Prelude or Reid Lake will go up in cost from $500 to $880.

The territory said a further non-refundable fee of $6 will also be applied to each booking, to offset the cost of a new online reservation system launching this year.

The territory said it last adjusted its campsite fees in 2009.

“For the first time in 15 years, the GNWT will increase NWT park fees as a strategic measure to avoid undercutting private campgrounds while upholding park standards as costs continue to rise across the country,” Caitlin Cleveland, the territory’s tourism minister, was quoted as saying.

“By charging market value for campsite rentals, the government is committed to sustaining our investments in park infrastructure and growing the user experience in all NWT parks.”

Campsite fees in the territory remain below the national average despite the increases, the GNWT asserted.

NWT Parks will start accepting reservations this season from 9am on April 16. The territorial government said it recommends that park users register online early this year.
