Conservatives in the Northwest Territories say they have begun the process of choosing a candidate for the next federal election.

The Conservative electoral district association in the NWT says it is seeking interested applicants for the role.

“We are seeking an energetic northern resident who can make the NWT’s voice heard in Ottawa and support a meaningful Arctic strategy that improves housing, health, security and jobs,” the association stated in an email circulated on Tuesday.

Last time around, the Conservatives somehow ended up fielding a candidate who had never been to the territory and who did not speak during the campaign.

Lea Mollison received 14 percent of the vote in 2021 despite those shortcomings, but her candidacy reduced the party to such a punchline in the NWT that Liberal incumbent Michael McLeod, in his victory speech, burst into laughter while attempting to thank “the lady from Thunder Bay” for running.

This time, the local association says it wants a candidate with “integrity, vision and drive.”

There’s no fixed date yet for the next federal election but it has to take place before October 21, 2025.

The New Democrats have already selected a candidate, Kelvin Kotchilea, who took 32 percent of the vote to McLeod’s 38 percent in 2021.
