Tuktoyaktuk’s Annie Steen has announced her intention to run for the position of MLA for Nunakput.

Steen is the first challenger to come forward after incumbent Herb Nakimayak told Cabin Radio earlier in July he will run for re-election.

With a background in tourism, transportation and logistics, and government, Steen said she was most recently the economic development officer for the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk and managed tourism initiatives for the community where she resides.

“In these capacities, I gained strong understanding of the community and human challenges and feel that, with this experience, I will be able to represent the communities in the Western Arctic very well,” she stated in an email to Cabin Radio.

Steen states she has also worked in transportation and logistics for over a decade, including managing the operations of Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk terminals for Northern Transportation Company Limited (NTCL) among others.

More than 20 people have announced their intention to run in the territorial election on October 1, when 19 MLAs will be chosen to lead the NWT over the next four years.
