Ten people will try to outlast each other on Gwich’in land in the new season of Alone, which begins airing on Thursday.
The History Channel show is in its 11th season. The concept involves dropping each competitor on their own with a limited range of tools and their own set of cameras, then following them as they try to create a shelter, find food and stay alive and healthy.
The last person standing wins $500,000, a press release associated with the show stated.
On Facebook, the Gwich’in Tribal Council said the production’s base camp had been the Gwich’in Wellness Camp during filming last fall and winter, adding the show was “shot entirely on Gwich’in Settlement Area lands.”
In its press release, the History Channel said the show features “the freezing, brutal landscape of Inuvik.”
While Alone has been shot in the NWT before – a couple of seasons were based along the East Arm of Great Slave Lake and, more recently, a show featuring British competitors took place near Fort Providence – this is the northernmost season in the show’s history.
“Equipped with only 10 basic survival tools, the participants face bone-chilling cold, icy landscapes, and intimidating predators including bears, wolves, and moose,” the press release stated.
“Participants must forage for their own food, build shelter, and overcome both physical and mental obstacles while self-recording their journey.”
An introductory special, titled Before the Drop, airs on the evening of Thursday, June 13 with the first episode shown immediately afterward. (The introductory show has an 8pm listed start time with the main show’s first episode at 9pm, though timings may vary according to your provider.)
According to the History Channel, this season will show a number of “series firsts.”
Without giving away details, the channel said that would include “remarkable game harvests, clever inventions, painful medical mishaps and nerve-wracking animal encounters,” as well as one of the longest-running seasons in the show’s history – a factor determined by how long at least two contenders are able to keep going.
