Habitat for Humanity NWT is celebrating two families as they become new homeowners.

The organization held “key ceremonies” for Brandee and her two children in Hay River as well as Candace, Christian and their two children in Yellowknife this week.

“I am very happy to see these families get the keys for their new homes and I wish them the very best as they start this new chapter in their lives,” NWT MP Michael McLeod said in a statement.

While Brandee and her family moved into their new home last year, the ceremony was postponed due to the multiple evacuations of Hay River last summer.

“Getting chosen for the Habitat program was the best thing to happen to my children and I. Having a safe and permanent home is what we’ve been working towards for a long time,” she said.

Habitat for Humanity NWT co-founder and board chair Dave Hurley said the organization allows families to own a home without a down payment and with mortgage payments geared to their income.

“Once again, our communities and supporters came together to help make these builds possible to make a meaningful difference in these family’s lives, and we are so excited to officially welcome our new deserving homeowners in two communities,” said Hurley, who recently won a national award for his work with the organization.

Funding for the homes was provided by the federal and NWT governments, Elks Lodge #314 Yellowknife, and contractors and businesses in Yellowknife and Hay River.

The City of Yellowknife and Town of Hay River donated lots for the homes. According to Habitat for Humanity NWT, Yellowknife has donated or subsidized eight lots for Habitat builds since 2013.
