One of the founders of Habitat for Humanity NWT is being recognized for his work with a prestigious award.
Habitat for Humanity Canada gave Dave Hurley the Terry Petkau Legacy Award at a ceremony in Ontario last week recognizing his “visionary leadership, commitments to partnership and accomplishments in building more homes for families.”
The award is the highest honour for members of the national organization.
Beyond co-founding Habitat for Humanity NWT, Hurley has served as its board chair for more than a decade and led its transition from traditional builds to modular, prefabricated homes.
According to a news release from the organization, that has allowed it to increase the number of homes it builds and make them more sustainable and affordable.
In a video shared at the ceremony, Eleanor Young, president and chief executive officer of Housing NWT, described Hurley as “the heart” of Habitat for Humanity NWT.
“You can really tell he cares about what he’s doing for these families,” she said.
“He makes the community, our affiliate, and the habitat Canada national organization better, kinder and stronger,” Alayna Ward, executive director of Habitat for Humanity NWT, said in a statement.
“He’s an inspiration, a role model, and truly embodies the heart of Habitat for Humanity’s mission of providing a hand up to northern families. He has been a driving force in helping the organization grow and we are fortunate to have him as part of the Habitat for Humanity NWT family.”
Hurley was one of 12 award winners from local Habitat for Humanity organizations across the country. Gerrad Oishi, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity southern Alberta, also received the Terry Petkau Legacy Award.
“These awards highlight the exceptional work of local habitats at a time when innovation, partnerships, and leadership are critical to responding to Canada’s housing crisis, and to helping us fulfill Habitat for Humanity’s vision and mission in Canada and around the world,” Julia Deans, president and chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Canada, said in a statement.
