The City of Yellowknife says a report into its handling of the 2023 wildfire and evacuation will now be published in July.

KPMG, the company hired to carry out the review, had previously said it expected a final report to be released by the end of June.

Initial observations made public by KPMG this month focused on challenges coordinating between City Hall, the NWT government and organizations that support vulnerable people, and a lack of clear, timely and adequate communication.

After seeing those preliminary results, the city said there was “nothing on the list that is a surprise to administration.”

The City of Yellowknife said on Wednesday it had launched a new wildfire information page to centralize information if another crisis unfolds. The GNWT, similarly criticized for the way it published information last year, has also tweaked the look and feel of its public safety page.

The city has also promised an updated community emergency plan and evacuation plan in the near future.
