NWT Fire says efforts to contain the fire on the edge of Fort Good Hope, VQ001, have been helped by days of damper weather.

The fire, which began as an abandoned campfire, was initially driven by dry air and strong winds last weekend.

On Thursday morning, wildfire information officer Frank McKay said the fire had “responded favourably to the recent cool, damp weather,” allowing firefighters to make progress.

No buildings are reported to have been lost to the fire so far.

Fort Good Hope’s own fire brigade is now incorporated in NWT Fire’s daily incident action plan, McKay said, adding that the two services are “using a collective approach … to protect the community.”

The 600 or so people who live in Fort Good Hope have been under an evacuation order since Saturday, although more than 100 chose to stay and help efforts to fight the fire.

Fort Good Hope was expected to receive more showers on Thursday, though the week ahead is forecast to remain dry.
