As Fort Good Hope residents approach two weeks away from their homes, NWT Fire says the weekend forecast means more “aggressive fire behaviour” is likely.
The Sahtu community has been under an evacuation order since June 15 over wildfire VQ001, which has reached its perimeter but has yet to burn any buildings within Fort Good Hope.
The fire broke through a containment line earlier in the week but has since been contained again, the territory’s wildfire agency stated.
Like other areas of the NWT, Fort Good Hope is in the middle of a string of particularly warm days and is under a heat warning.
Temperatures are forecast to hit 30C on Friday, 29C on Saturday and 28C on Sunday. There is the prospect of some showers by the middle of next week.
In the meantime, NWT Fire said in a Friday morning update, “dry weather is expected to continue with the evenings offering little relief.”
“It can be expected that we will see continue to see aggressive fire behaviour. This could create localized smoke in the affected areas that may be visible from the community.”
The fire has grown to 6,285 hectares burned, NWT Fire reported on Friday.
Firefighters’ efforts are focused on “containing the fire perimeter facing the community, with a focus on the excursion on the north side.”
