You can find longer summaries on NWT Fire’s Facebook page and website, Alberta Wildfire’s website and Parks Canada’s Facebook page for Wood Buffalo National Park, depending on the area that interests you. We will blend updates from all three here, alongside information from the GNWT, community governments and Indigenous governments where appropriate.

The latest

A wildfire threatening Highway 1 near the Alberta border “continues to challenge ground crews and pilots as the South Slave sees more hot, dry and windy conditions, fuelling the fire’s growth,” NWT Fire said on Monday afternoon.

The highway closed multiple times over the weekend as fire rolled across the road and smoke reduced visibility almost to zero.

“For the past few days, crews and aircraft have focused their efforts on values at risk, which include structure protection, the rail line, and ensuring [the Department of] Infrastructure is notified of any risk to highway travellers,” the wildfire agency added.

“NWT Fire is in direct contact GNWT Infrastructure and CN Rail, providing daily updates on the fire situation. The area will see precipitation on Tuesday, which will help with overall fire suppression.”

Check road conditions before you travel. The road could close at short notice.

Elsewhere, NWT Fire said temperatures are cooling but “the risk of wildfire is still real.”

The Kakisa Lake wildfire grew a little to the east over the weekend but “there is no risk to cabins, infrastructure or communities,” NWT Fire said.

“An incident management team is continuing work on the east and north sides with direct attacks from the ground and air.”

A fire 17 km northeast of Fort Resolution has grown to 3.5 hectares burned. “Crews and aircraft have been actioning the fire and have seen positive results,” NWT Fire said on Monday.

“Due to the drought conditions, this fire has burned deep into the ground. To combat this, ground crews have established a trail around the fire perimeter. Water hoses will then be laid down on this trail and crews will soak the fire until it is completely extinguished. There is no risk to the community, cabins or infrastructure at this time.”

In the Sahtu and Dehcho, there was no significant fire growth reported.
