One kilogram of methamphetamine was seized by police this spring – what they believe may be the largest seizure of this drug in the NWT to date.

Police initially suspected the substance was cocaine, but recent drug analysis results showed it was actually methamphetamine pressed in pill form.

RCMP came upon the meth in the spring after receiving a complaint on May 22 that several people were squatting in a recently vacated apartment.

The police explained in a news release on Thursday that when they investigated, they arrested someone who was trying to escape through the balcony.

“A search warrant was later obtained for the unit by Yellowknife RCMP’s General Investigation Section. During the search, 2 handguns, over $12,000 in cash, a quantity of prescription drugs, illicit cannabis products, and a large quantity of suspected cocaine were seized, along with other drug paraphernalia,” explained the RCMP in the news release.

Musab Ibrahim, a 21-year-old from Saskatoon, is facing a series of charges relating to trafficking drugs; being in the apartment unlawfully; and possessing proceeds of a crime, a firearm with ammunition without a licence, and a prohibited device.

The charges have not been proven in court and the investigation remains ongoing.

Ibrahim has appeared before a justice of the peace and was released. They will appear in court again at a later date.
