Eugene Hope was re-elected as chief of the Acho Dene Koe First Nation on Thursday according to preliminary results posted to the First Nation’s Facebook page.

Those results show Hope receiving 158 votes while Brenda Berreault received 75 and Vanessa Villeneuve 15.

Berreault and Villeneuve are instead acclaimed as councillors alongside Donny Bertrand, Morris McLeod and Dennis Nelson.

Under the Fort Liard-based First Nation’s election code, an appeals period runs until September 6.

Hope was first elected chief in 2017 and has subsequently been re-elected multiple times, including contentious elections between 2021 and 2023 that involved one set of results being declared invalid and a lengthy court battle that in part examined who should be allowed to run.
