Drivers heading between the Northwest Territories and Alberta should prepare themselves for delays on Highway 1 this Labour Day weekend.
The road near the border has been beset by wildfires for weeks, with closures, pilot cars and heavy smoke becoming a near-daily event.
On Friday evening, NWT Fire warned that both the Dehcho and South Slave regions of the territory “will have conditions to support significant growth on new fires” over the weekend.
The stretch of highway immediately north of the Alberta border didn’t get the same rain that recently fell on nearby areas, the wildfire agency stated, and the region is “expected to heat up through the weekend.”
“Expect fire activity in the area through Sunday,” NWT Fire advised.
The territory has a new highway conditions website, Drive NWT, which travellers should check before departing for the border.
