Uber Eats will launch in Yellowknife this fall, joining the likes of Doordash and SkipTheDishes in providing door-to-door delivery.
In a Tuesday email, the company said Whitehorse and Yellowknife are its next destinations and it is “reaching out to potential delivery people and merchants to get ready for launch.”
“This is part of our continued expansion across the country. There has been interest from merchants as they’ve heard we are expanding to the territories and residents are already opening the app searching for their favourite local restaurants,” the company proclaimed.
“We plan to launch in the fall and will provide information when available.”
Uber Eats is primarily a food delivery service, of which Yellowknife already has several.
A few of the city’s restaurateurs initially mounted a spirited defence when food delivery apps first arrived in the NWT capital, briefly chasing them away after Doordash was accused of listing some restaurants on its app without their consent.
That was in 2020. Four years later, despite that faux pas, Doordash and SkipTheDishes have become fixtures on the Yellowknife dining scene.
Uber gave no suggestion that its original ridesharing service is also coming north.
City councillors only just discussed whether Uber or Lyft coming to Yellowknife would be a possibility. A city staff member said last month that Uber, when contacted by the city on the matter, had shown little to no interest in expanding ridesharing to the North.
Uber has been approached for comment on that aspect of its operations.
