Field Law launches 2024 community fund

Applications are now open for Field Law’s 12th annual community fund program, which offers a total of $80,000 to charitable organizations, non-profits and individuals in the NWT and Alberta.

Eligible NWT applicants can receive up to $15,000 from the fund. Field Law is encouraging organizations and projects that support education, health care, at-risk youth, homelessness, diversity, equity, sports, and arts and culture, as well as women’s organizations, to apply.

This year, Field Law, a law firm with offices in Alberta and Yellowknife, is introducing the $5,000 Next Gen Award. It will support ideas and causes submitted by post-secondary students that better campuses or local communities, such as a campus food bank or student legal aid.

“We understand that students can sometimes feel powerless to improve their communities. This award is our way of encouraging them to turn their ideas into reality, helping to build a better future for their campuses and local communities,” Jeremiah Kowalchuk, managing partner at Field Law, said in a statement.

Applications for the fund close on October 3. Residents in the NWT and Alberta will then be able to vote on their favourite submissions on Field Law’s website starting October 10.

“The submissions we receive each year reflect the remarkable spirit and creativity of our local communities,” Kowalchuk said. “We believe it’s essential to engage members of the community in choosing the causes that matter most to them.”

Last year’s grand prize winner in the NWT was the robotics program at Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife. A press release states the funding allowed the classroom to include additional students, purchase robotics supplies and continue to develop the program.

The NWT SPCA was also awarded funds in 2023 to support its Last Litter Program to care for pregnant dogs and puppies, and spay mothers after puppies are done nursing.
