The City of Yellowknife is launching changes to its transit system including new bus routes, schedules and fares.

In a Monday news release, the city said the changes “will provide commuters with more direct and frequent routes as well as improve accessibility.”

Among the new routes will be YK Connector, which the city said will offer service every 30 minutes to key locations during peak hours. Stops along the route will include Stanton Territorial Hospital, Old Town, Ndılǫ, the pool and downtown. YK Connector will also provide twice daily service on weekdays to Kam Lake.

Bush Order Provisions, a market garden and bakery located on Enterprise Drive, has already expressed excitement online that there will be a new bus stop nearby on Taltheilei Drive.

More information on the new routes and schedules can be found in the 2024 Yellowknife Rider’s Guide.

The city is also launching new bus fares and ticket packages. The new fares will be $2 for a single ticket for all riders, $18 full fare and $12 discounted fare for a 10-ride pass, $75 full and $50 discounted fare for a 31-day pass, and $750 full and $500 discounted fare for an annual pass. Seniors, students, people with disabilities and registered accessible transit system users are eligible for discounted fares.

Currently, depending on the rider, a single bus ticket costs $2 to $3, $20 to $30 for a sheet of 11 tickets, and $500 to $750 for an annual pass.

The new routes, schedules and fares will take effect on October 1.

The changes follow a review of Yellowknife’s public transit system. The city previously launched a new fleet of accessible buses in April and plans to rebrand the Yellowknife Accessible Transit System to YKFlex.

The municipality said it will soon switch over to the Passio GO app, which will provide real-time bus tracking.
