A storm over the South Nahanni River basin this week could dump enough water to increase flood risk in Nahanni Butte, the GNWT says, urging residents to stay up to date.
In a Monday afternoon news release, the territorial government said a storm on Monday and Tuesday is expected to drop between 25 and 40 mm of rainfall in the basin. Water levels on the river are already higher than normal.
“Heavy rainfall combined with accelerated melt of remaining snow could cause rapid rises in water levels and river flows,” the GNWT stated.
“Nahanni Butte may face an increased risk of flooding if river levels rise significantly.”
The GNWT is advising Nahanni Butte residents to stay aware of the storm’s progress and the possibility of swiftly rising water levels in the days ahead.
“Those planning to be out on the land should be aware that this rainfall may cause rapid rises in water levels and flow. Be prepared with communication methods before you go out on the land, know the conditions and be prepared to leave your cabin, camp, or cabin on short notice should flooding become imminent,” the GNWT stated.
Households should make sure they have an emergency plan and stay up to date, the news release added.
