A Yellowknife family whose home burned in a house fire last weekend thanked the community as an online fundraiser was established to help their recovery.

Nearly $10,000 has been raised to help the Deans family after the fire, which gutted part of their townhome at the Borealis Housing Co-op.

The family made it out safely but with few possessions and nowhere to live.

In an update published to a GoFundMe page created in their name this week, Keith and Zabrina Deans said they wanted to “take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks for all the incredible support you’ve given us during this difficult time.”

“From reaching out to check on us, cooking meals, helping with laundry, and offering financial assistance, you have all gone above and beyond in ways we will never forget,” they wrote.

“Your care, kindness, and generosity have truly carried us through these challenging days. The constant love and concern you’ve shown have brought us so much comfort, and we appreciate everything you have done more than words can express.”

The fundraiser remains open. Its creators said all money raised goes directly to the Deans family to “help them get through this unimaginable event.”

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the fire, the cause of which remains unknown.
