NWT MLAs have followed the integrity commissioner’s recommendation in formally reprimanding Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh MLA Richard Edjericon and fining him $2,500.

Commissioner David Phillip Jones had recommended the reprimand and fine after finding Edjericon had broken the code of conduct for MLAs when he orchestrated a campaign to have the nurse-in-charge at Fort Resolution’s health centre removed from her position.

Edjericon, in a statement issued by his lawyer after the report was publicly released, said he accepted Jones’ findings about his actions as well as the recommended punishments.

In the legislature on Monday, MLAs voted in favour of formally reprimanding Edjericon and fining him $2,500 with no discussion of the matter.

Following the vote, speaker Shane Thompson encouraged MLAs with any future questions regarding the code of conduct to reach out to the integrity commissioner.

“I had him on speed dial in the 18th and 19th Assembly,” Thompson said. “He’s very helpful in providing some clear direction to help you move forward.”
