The NWT government says it has adopted a service that helps assess international teachers’ credentials and language skills if they want to work in the territory.
Pathways to Teach Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative that provides a “single window of entry” to internationally educated teachers – known as IETs.
In a Thursday news release, the GNWT said Pathways to Teach will offer a “transparent, consistent and timely” assessment process that can help education bodies hire teachers. It doesn’t certify teachers, which remains the GNWT’s responsibility.
To be eligible for certification, IETs must have an active job offer in the NWT and be legally allowed to work in the country.
Education minister Caitlin Cleveland said the service will make it easier to recruit qualified educators in the North.
