The federal government says it is providing nearly $1.5 million “to eliminate barriers” to building housing in Fort Simpson and Jean Marie River.
The money, from the Housing Accelerator Fund, is going to the Fort Simpson Métis Nation ($580,000) and Jean Marie River First Nation ($885,000).
Accelerator fund cash has also gone to communities like Yellowknife and Hay River in recent months. It can’t be spent directly on housing but can be used on policies, incentives and other measures designed to make homebuilding easier.
Michael McLeod, the NWT’s Liberal MP, said the new agreements would “fast-track a combined total of 23 housing units over the next three years” in the two Dehcho communities and “help spur the construction of 52 homes over the next decade.”
Precise plans were not immediately available.
“We need more housing for our members, and this investment will help us improve the ability to build more homes in our community,” Chief of Jean Marie River Melanie Norwegian Menacho was quoted as saying.
