Yellowknife overnight vigil for Remembrance Day

Cadets in Yellowknife will begin an overnight vigil on Sunday that leads into Monday’s Remembrance Day ceremonies across the territory.

Air cadets and army cadets have held Remembrance Day vigils in Yellowknife for nearly half a century, organizers said in a press release.

More than 40 representatives of Yellowknife Army Cadets and Yellowknife Elks Air Cadets will stand watch at the city’s cenotaph from 6pm on Sunday onward.

“Cadets will march in pairs to the cenotaph and take turns as ‘guards’ throughout the night. Their silent vigil posts will rotate in short shifts in order to minimize the impact of the anticipated cold weather,” the press release stated. The forecast overnight low is -14C.

Yellowknife: a military parade and wreath-laying from 9:40am at the Yellowknife cenotaph, followed by a service at the St Pat’s and Weledeh gym. Attendees are asked to be seated by 10:40am. (See a map of parade road closures and timings.)

Fort Smith: a service at the Salt River First Nation Conference Centre from 10:30am with wreath-laying at 11:30am, followed by lunch and live music. From 2-4pm at the Northern Life Museum you can view the opening of a First World War exhibition.

Hay River: a ceremony begins at the Hay River Legion at 10:30am with a meal and refreshments afterward.

Fort Providence: a service begins at the school gymnasium at 10:45am, followed by refreshments and snacks.

Fort Simpson: doors open for Monday’s service at the rec centre gymnasium at 10am.

Behchokǫ̀: A Remembrance Day community lunch is served at the Behchokǫ̀ Culture Centre from 12pm.
