The North’s “biggest grappling event” – the North of 60 Judo Open – returns to Yellowknife on Saturday, November 23.

Organizers say they are expecting more than 100 participants at the DND gym inside the city’s multiplex.

A training camp takes place on the days around the tournament, while Saturday’s event concludes with a group dinner.

Michael (Moh’d Nour) Salim, NWT Judo’s program manager and the Yellowknife head coach, said the tournament had been “revitalized” and will welcome a broader range of attendees this year.

“This is our biggest event in the territory. In terms of wrestling and grappling arts, it’s the largest event – we’ve got the tournament open to all grapplers, so wrestlers and Brazilian jiu jitsu and other grappling arts are also welcome,” Salim said.

“We’ve got teams all over the Territories, out in the Dehcho, up in Inuvik and in Yellowknife. All of those teams collect in the North of 60 Judo Championship.”

Salim said judo in the NWT has seen “a lot of growth” since the North of 60 event was first held in the years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In Yellowknife and Inuvik in particular, our judo communities have doubled in both areas,” he said.

“You’re finding a lot of more members, a lot more participation, a higher level of competition.”

The public is welcome at the event. Find out more on NWT Judo’s website.
