The NWT government is trying to find someone in the childcare business who’ll take a modular building off its hands and use it to open up more spaces.
The building was used at Yellowknife’s William McDonald Middle School to house extra students while École Įtłʼǫ̀, a replacement for École JH Sissons, was being built.
It is now four years old, has an expected lifespan of 25 years according to the GNWT, and isn’t doing anything.
The territory says the modular building includes four rooms, two washrooms, a mechanical room, a janitor’s closet, a ramp, stairs and a corridor. It has a capacity of up to 56 children.
The GNWT is so keen for someone to repurpose the building into childcare space that it says there’ll be funding available to renovate it. The building’s current worth was estimated by the territory at $2 million.
Now, the territory says it wants to find “an organization with experience delivering early learning and childcare operations that has access to suitable land.”
“The unit will be transferred on condition that the respondent demonstrates the capacity to incorporate the additional spaces into their existing early learning and childcare operations,” a request for expressions of interest added.
While the building could be transported to most places in the territory, the GNWT said its size and weight may mean that road and bridge restrictions prevent it from reaching some communities.
Interested parties have until January 8, 2025 to express interest, the GNWT said in a press release.
