Eight new councillors and a mayor for Tsiigehtchic were sworn in on Wednesday.
The former charter community officially transitioned into a hamlet on July 1 last year after a majority of residents voted in favour of the switch.

The community now has a separate hamlet council and band council – meaning residents who are not part of the band can vote and run for mayor and council.
In a news release, the GNWT listed the newly elected members as Mayor Shawn Van Loon and councillors James Andre, Davina Benoit-Cardinal, Charlene Blake, Dinah Blake, Georgie Niditchie, Peter Ross, Shaylene Shae and Brian Smith.
The NWT’s Department of Municipal and Community Affairs received a petition in 2019 from residents seeking a change in status. According to Maca, 55 percent of eligible voters participated in December’s election.
