Thinking of skiing the Frostbite 55 this winter? You have six weeks to get ready.
Billed by organizers as “Yellowknife’s premier winter endurance challenge,” the Frostbite 55 cross-country ski and snowshoe challenge returns on March 15.
The 55-km course loops around Yellowknife, Dettah and beyond. It’s divided into four sections of 10 to 15 kilometres, so skiers and snowshoers can choose to complete the entire course on their own or divide it among friends relay-style.

“We’re excited to build on past successes and further improve the Frostbite 55 experience. We adjusted the course last year to keep it engaging for returning participants, and are also looking to expand the event to encourage participants travelling to Yellowknife from abroad,” said Ben Linaker, a member of the organizing committee, in a news release.
“Last year’s course changes were generally well received, and we’ve made some minor tweaks to address feedback from participants,” he said.

In 2024, the course lengthened to 55 km from its former standard of 50 km.
If skiing 55 km wasn’t enough of an incentive, Linaker noted prizes have been secured from local businesses for volunteers and participants.

Early bird pricing runs until February 6. Yellowknife Ski Club members are eligible for a 10-percent registration discount.
Registration for the event closes on March 10.

Event organizers are also looking for volunteers to help out at the finish line at the Yellowknife Ski Club chalet, manage checkpoints, and complete snowmobile safety rides on the course.

Editor’s note: Sarah, who wrote this article, also takes photos for the event as a paid engagement. I’ve reviewed this article for signs of bias toward cross-country skiing and am satisfied. In the interests of balance, I will not be skiing 55 kilometres. – Ollie
