Editor’s note: Following publication of this report, the charge against the man who was arrested was withdrawn.
RCMP have provided more information about the incident that led to a community lockdown being declared for a short period in Tsiigehtchic on Thursday afternoon.
The hamlet urged people to “go safely” to their homes and stay there after receiving an unspecified threat. That warning was soon lifted.
RCMP said on Friday that a 65-year-old man, whose identity was not given, had been taken into custody.
Police said an individual had “made threats to obtain a firearm and discharge it around town,” triggering the lockdown.
“Officers of the Fort McPherson detachment immediately attended the community and located the suspect, having locked himself inside his residence,” RCMP stated.
“Investigation determined that the suspect was not likely to be armed despite the threats. Officers obtained a warrant to enter the residence and arrested the suspect without further incident. No firearm was located.”
The man has been released on conditions, police said, and is due to appear in court in Fort McPherson on April 8.
