NWT Liberal MP Michael McLeod has announced $93 million in new federal funding to support housing in the Akaitcho and Dehcho regions.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon.

The funding comes from the Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy, which was a part of the Liberal government’s 2021 election platform.

A chart provided by Michael McLeod – based on Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada data – displays funding for housing to be distributed to First Nations and Métis governments.

Of the $93 million, more than $57 million is earmarked for First Nations in the Dehcho region. Nations in the Akaitcho region will receive nearly $33 million and Métis governments will receive around $3 million.

More details about the funding are expected to come from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada at a later date.
