The operators of the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road say it will close for the 2025 season at the end of Saturday, March 29.

The road, which is around 400 km long, stretches from the end of Highway 4 northeast of Yellowknife to the NWT’s three active diamond mines.

The winter road season is a vital resupply period for those mines and also allows the backhaul of waste and spent equipment.

From March 7: No injuries after truck incident on winter road

This year, the joint venture operating the road had anticipated roughly 5,500 loads would head north over the course of the road’s lifespan. By March 23, officials said, 94 percent of the season’s shipments had been completed.

“There may be traffic on the winter road until all southbound trucks have been cleared. The gate will be closed and locked at noon on Thursday, April 3,” winter road staff said on Tuesday.
