The Kátł’odeeche First Nation warned members on Wednesday that the ice road between KFN and Hay River is closed and any attempt to cross “is extremely hazardous.”

The Town of Hay River, sharing KFN’s advisory, added that “multiple ATVs have gone through the ice this week.”

The ice road is a far shorter route between the two communities than the all-season route that loops all the way south of Hay River, briefly along the highway to Fort Smith and then back up the access road to the First Nation.

But the crossing is now “unstable and conditions are unpredictable,” KFN stated on Facebook.

“For your safety, do not attempt to cross under any circumstances. We urge everyone to adhere to this warning and seek alternative routes.”
