An electric vehicle charging corridor that’s expected to connect Yellowknife to Alberta is still waiting for a couple of charging stations to come online.
At the start of the year, the NWT government said its network of chargers along Highway 3 and Highway 1 would be ready for use in March.
Fast chargers in Yellowknife, Behchokǫ̀ and Hay River are already available.
However, chargers in Fort Providence and Enterprise – which would each fill significant gaps in the corridor – are still being worked on.
“Progress installing the EV chargers in Fort Providence and Enterprise has been steady and both chargers are nearing completion,” the NWT government told Cabin Radio in an update this week.
Naka Power, which will operate the chargers in those communities, has installed both stations but is “awaiting essential components to finalize the connection,” the GNWT stated.
“Once the connection and final inspection process is complete, it will take a few days to conduct testing to ensure safe and reliable operation.
“The GNWT is working closely with Naka Power to coordinate the official launch of both stations and currently anticipates that they will be operational before the start of summer.”
Fort Smith and Behchokǫ̀ were the latest communities to switch on EV chargers, in February.
Another planned charging station at Buffalo Junction in the South Slave is “delayed due to civil construction issues,” the department said earlier this year, and will be finished at some point in the 2025-26 financial year.
