The Town of Hay River says three designated off-leash dog parks are now available for public use.

Last year, Hay River announced plans to open a series of off-leash dog parks across the community, starting with an initial site on Vale Island. The project aimed to create safe, fenced spaces where residents and their dogs could gather, socialize, and exercise.

This week, the town said all dog parks at Vale Island Park, Keith Broadhead Park and Don Wright Ball Park are now open.

On Tuesday, the town posted a set of rules online for the recognized off-leash areas to ensure a safe environment for residents.

Under the code of conduct, owners are required to keep an eye on their dogs at all times and must always have a leash in their possession. For those using the fenced parks, the town said dogs should only be unleashed within the designated gated areas, and owners must remain inside the fence with their pets.

The notice stated that female dogs in heat, sick dogs, and puppies under four months old are not allowed in the parks. To help prevent conflicts, aggressive dogs must be muzzled, and owners are advised to avoid using treats or toys when other dogs are nearby.

According to the town, children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and all dogs must have a current Town of Hay River license and up-to-date vaccinations. Owners are also required to clean up after their pets with users required to bring their own waste bags. The town said a waste bin is located in the parking area.

There are other open off-leash zones in Hay River like the Ski Club Tigger Trail, Scout’s Trail, and 6-Mile Beach, the Oxbow Trail and the riverfront trails at Fraser Place. The town said these areas areas are unmanaged and must be used with caution.
