Multiple residents have described a large police operation taking place in the vicinity of Yellowknife’s Bigelow Crescent early on Saturday morning.

Witnesses said they heard loud bangs – similar to gunfire or the stun grenades sometimes used by police during operations – starting at around 4:30-5am.

In video footage, RCMP officers can be heard telling occupants of a property: “You are all under arrest. We have a warrant.”

Multiple police vehicles were at the scene.

Few details of the operation could be immediately confirmed.

Police have been approached for more information, though the RCMP media relations desk in the NWT is generally not staffed on weekends.

Bigelow Crescent, in a residential area of Yellowknife, has made headlines multiple times in recent years as the scene of a double homicide and other crimes.

Residents have launched initiatives to try to improve the area as a consequence.
