Yellowknife’s LJJ Barber Shop has a new location and after four months is back in business, offering free cuts to support Yellowknife’s homeless population.

The barber shop’s new location opened at 5111 51 Street last Tuesday.

Jonel Louis-Jean said offering free haircuts to the city’s vulnerable population is a way for him to not only be part of the community, but to be useful for society.

“They don’t have people to talk to them, to take care of them,” he said.

The free haircuts will be offered daily at least through the end of summer. Some people have already taken advantage of the offer and Louis-Jean expects it to form up to 15 percent of his daily business.

Louis-Jean said renovations at the new location took four months and were challenging but the new decor reflects his vibe. Unlike the previous location, he said, this one now looks like a barber shop.

LJJ Barber Shop says it aims to be welcoming toward people of all ages, genders, races and hair types. The business features a ramp and accessible bathroom.

Louis-Jean said his happiness comes from his clients. “When they are satisfied, then the satisfaction comes back to us,” he said.
