Goodbye, up to an hour of free parking at Yellowknife Airport. Hello, new fees that take effect from July 1, 2025.

In a Monday news release, the NWT government – which runs the airport – said it is introducing new parking fees “to reflect the true cost of operations, ensuring the airport remains financially self-sustaining.”

Landing fees for aircraft are also going up slightly.

Free parking in the short-term lot for less than an hour is gone. Sneak in there for five minutes? That’ll now be $2.

The fee you pay per hour in the short-term lot is doubling from $1 to $2, while the daily fee in the long-term lot is going up by 60 percent to $12.

If you lose your parking ticket, you must now pay $250 – roughly the same as the fee for about half a month of parking – as a penalty. The previous penalty was $150.

“The proposed changes aim to better align YZF’s fees with comparable airports across Canada, ensuring the airport remains financially sustainable while providing high-quality services,” the territorial government stated.

“YZF operates on a cost-recovery basis, meaning fees are set to cover the cost of providing services, not to generate profit.”

Correction: June 2, 2025 – 15:37 MT. The NWT government got its figures wrong in its initial news release. The fee for a lost ticket isn’t going from $75 to $150 as the GNWT originally stated. It’s going from $150 to $250. This article was amended after the GNWT corrected itself.
