Yellowknife Farmers Market returns for its 13th year on June 3, 2025, with warm weather to kick off the season.

The forecast for Tuesday’s opening market day of the season is predicting sunny weather with a gentle breeze and a high of 13C.

The market will run every Tuesday from June 3 to September 16 at Somba K’e Civic Plaza with the exception of July 1, when the City of Yellowknife will hold Canada Day activities instead.

This year’s market will have more than 50 vendors in attendance, organizers say, selling locally grown, made and sourced items ranging from produce, fish and baked goods to crafts, jewellery, health products and more. Visit the market’s website for more information on vendors and to view a map.

“We are back. Back to high numbers of vendors,” market co-founder and president France Benoit told Cabin Radio last week.

“We’re back to pre-pandemic levels, lots of new vendors, lots of food.”

Last year, organizers said, sales at the market totalled $218,204.

The Music at the Market program will provide live music from 5:30-6:30pm each week, featuring local artists such as Grace Clark, Priscilla’s Revenge, The Straydogs and Bella Dance Academy.

The market will also continue its waste reduction program. Organizers say 85 percent of the total waste produced by the market last year was composted.

The harvesters’ table returns, offering local gardeners the opportunity to sell their excess produce, as does the community table program, where local organizations and non-profits can promote themselves to market-goers and vendors alike.

Yellowknife’s market isn’t the only one coming to the NWT this summer. Here are some details about other markets whose organizers spoke with us about what to expect.

Hay River

The Town of Hay River will hold its Fisherman’s Wharf Market at the pavilion on Vale Island from 10am-2pm every Saturday from June 14 until September 13.

At the Fisherman’s Wharf Market you will find anything from handcrafted items to freshly prepared food and fresh produce. The market is intended to foster a safe, fun, and professional environment for both vendors and patrons, organizers said.

This market is known for its delicious fresh-fried fish.

Fort Simpson

Fort Simpson’s farmers’ market began its summer season on May 24. It returns every third Saturday until the end of August outside the village recreation centre.

The market features fresh produce and baked goods, handcrafted items and information tables, as well as a harvesters’ table where local gardeners and growers can sell fresh fruits and vegetables.

“We’re just trying to get a nice community event for everyone to find a local space to buy freshly grown products, baked goods and arts and crafts,” organizer Claudia Ossege told Cabin Radio.

Inuvik

Inuvik’s Arctic Market runs from June 7 to August 23 at the Welcome Centre, 190 Mackenzie Road in Inuvik. The event will run from 11am-2pm every Saturday and feature food products, woven crafts, stained glass, sewn items such as fur mittens, parkas and bags among other locally crafted items.

The Arctic Market “encourages young entrepreneurs, creatives, to develop some selling skills and some people skills, customer service.  It’s a really nice place for a lot of local crafters.” Amanda Szedo, Inuvik’s special projects and events coordinator, told Cabin Radio.

To promote entrepreneurship and self-sustainability, the market allows children under the age of 14 to reserve a table at no charge in order to sell and advertise their handcrafted or handmade products.  For more information, visit Inuvik’s events page.
