The City of Yellowknife is requesting residents’ input on draft actions for a climate action plan to cover the decade from 2026 to 2036.
The city held a survey about the action plan earlier this year. Now, residents are invited to a discussion from 6:30-8pm on Wednesday, June 25 at City Hall’s council chambers.
Residents will be able to study draft climate actions the city has drawn up, ask questions and share input directly with city planners.
There is also a PlaceSpeak survey to fill out online. (You will need to create a free PlaceSpeak account to view and participate.) That survey will be open to residents until July 4.
“Our Climate Action Plan is structured around six key themes. Each theme is comprised of goals to strive for, strategies to mitigate or adapt to climate change, and specific actions to take,” the city stated.
“On-road transportation accounts for 20 percent of the community’s GHG emissions in 2023. Embracing active and public transportation and decarbonizing the City fleet can help us reduce our emissions while offering several co-benefits, including improved health and well-being,” the city added as an example of actions that can be taken.
“Solid waste is the largest contributing source of emissions, accounting for 73 percent of 2023 corporate greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing the amount of waste we produce, as well as diverting as much as possible, particularly organic materials, will limit the growth of solid waste emissions, lessen landfill impacts on our surrounding ecosystem, and increase the longevity of our landfill cells.”
The survey asks participants how supportive they are of a series of actions drafted to address climate change.
